SCORECARD

Competitive Season Kicks Off With Low Scoring Thriller

Following the interclub game on Sunday, the Fitmen welcomes WMD to the Graveyard the first normal fixture of the season. Most Fitmen were at the ground, registered and changed into their whites well before the 17:30 meet time for the 6pm start. This really is a strange new world.

That said normality was resumed with a call from Brother Nut at 17:34:
Skip – “Are you on the M40?”
Brother Nut - “I’m outside the gates, their locked, which entrance is it?”.
Skip “It’s the home game mate”
Brother Nut “Bugger- the website says…….. nevermind, will be there soon.”

Toss- Matt Hancocks appointed Captain called heads, madness South of Birmingham, tails landed and the Fitmen had a bat.

The Fitmen has a strong lineup, batting all the way down. Gav and Mo opened up with a remit to go big. Mo started well, the first ball ran 2, second ball 4, third ball nice juicy half-tracker kept low and clattered into his timbers.

Sam Moore hit the first official SIXER of the season into a tree on the golf course, (holding the pose for his gf on the sidelines). He looked in great touch but fell for 15 miss timing another big one.

The Docs opening bowlers bowled very well pace and swing, taking advantage of the cloudy conditions. It was tough out there. Only compounded with after months on the front line not catching Covid-19, the Doctors were catching pigeons and held everything. Gav, Juma, Stevie Nics and Bro Nut all out for single digits, trying to move the scoreboard along.

Fitmen fought to a respectable 103 thanks to the lower middle order engine room. Skipper Jonesy hit 16 off 13. The illegidly out of form Chaz found, form with a classy 22 not out of 25, including a classically, cultured straight drive, which tested the foundations of the white fence behind the sightscreen as the ball smashed into it. And on full debut Timmsy running each of his 19 valuable runs.

Opening bowling partnership of sunburnt Mouldy and fully gloved up Fraz got a bit of treatment from WMDs opening batsmen and it looked like an early finish as they ‘beat it’ to the boundary with ease.

Although again the Fitmen fought back, Timmsy and Juma took their first fitmen wickets and slowed the run rate down. Jonesy chipped in with 2 wickets. Mouldy second spells brought more control. Fraz ‘ made that change’ of ends and his third over was a ‘Thriller’ as he ‘remembed the time’ he bowled with line and length. Chaz had an over which tested the clubhouse roof and with the Doctors swaggering to the finish with an over from Gavlar.

Not a close game, but we were all grateful for it. After an early summer of Thursday evening on the doorstep clapping for Doctors, it was more rewarding for them and us to have a bloody good game of cricket and a beer after.

Go well.
