Fit Men make it a magnificent seven in a row!

Tested by the late withdrawal due to a Sunday morning ascent of Snowdon by a team member……followed by a Saturday evening call to skipper Howarth by DDH……and when DDH calls out of hours you know it’s a problem! Conversation ensued from DDH worried that his egg sarnies that he planned to make for the game the following day would be cooked literally in his car pre-cricket match as DDH took part in a “show footie match” rubbing shoulders with the likes of Stillian Petrov. With DDH’s concerns over the health and well being of fellow Fit Men consuming cooked egg sarnies allayed. Skipper was asked to undertake the making of said sarnies, under strict instructions from the “egg sarnie supremo” not to forget the secret recipe (2 teaspoons of Colmans mustard). So with egg sarnies under control and 12th man TC promoted to 11th man and VC the Fit Men were ready to take on Kahlsa Leamington’s XI……which under closer inspection turned out to be 9!

A look at the pitch……green and under humid conditions (with the words in his ears of swing bowlers and master batsmen to field first)……skipper won the toss and inserted the Khalsa 9 (2 of their players being allowed to have another swipe later on…..being the lowest scorers first time round).

Opening bowlers DDH (slightly jaded and with an imminent lactic acid spasm pending, having spurned 5 chances “set on a plate” earlier in the day by Stan Petrov) and James Tasker bowled a superb opening spell in tandem. DDH taking a 4for and James 1for (but deserved much more). The combo got the ball to jag, move off the seam and swing reducing the oppo to 43-5 (including class bat, captain, keeper and off spinner Yudi….bowled leg stump by a stunning off cutter that jagged back massively by DDH). The opening bowlers where backed up well by the 1st change duo of Raj and and left arm gripper Tony. Raj was rewarded with 2 wickets and Tony a 1for (and most economical figures of the day 7-2-24-1). Meanwhile the Khalsa number 4 bat was in his stride passing 50 with ease, being particularly punishing on the drive both off and on…..but he needed a partner to hang in with him, which for a short time he had with their fixture secretary Gurj who liked to swipe to leg. Much to the visible pains of Gav (self proclaimed Master of the Universe……see his WhatsApp name)….who was suffering badly with his back……at backward square leg. Enter into the attack the final bowling combo of Stuart Mould and Sharif and with the Khalsa innings looking to accelerate in the final overs both bowlers bowled excellently in ever increasing humidity. Sharif bowling the number 4 bat and Tom Houlgate’s doppleganger for an excellent (dropped 4 times) 92! Meanwhile Stuart aided by a well judged catch by James Tasker was rewarded with a wicket (and again deserved far more)….the Khalsa innings ended on 213 for 9.

A fine tea was laid out before all including such savory delights as pakora (by Raj’s sister in law), crisps (Horatio), sandwiches: Tuna and mayo (Gav), Cheese (James), Egg (Howarth)……..cakes by the House of Bice……carrot cup cakes adorning a cake stand and a white chocolate and raspberry sponge cake….washed down with tea, cordial and Aspalls! Simply delicious!

The Fit Men reply was started by Mo and Gav……both of whom started very well …..sadly the latter departing first having struck 3 fine 4’s, bowled for 13. Enter number 3: Frost (who had put behind him the earlier pre-match distraction of losing his 18inch, blue, nodule tubed hip exerciser) who attacked immediately smiting 3 excellent 4’s (1 was nearly a six, plugging just in front of the long on fence) before being bowled for 15. With Mo in imperious punishing mood and hitting 4’s and six’s at will whilst finding the gaps regularly and running between the wickets at will, Skipper joined Mo putting together a 130 odd run partnership. Mo going to a majestic ton soon after the drinks break (3rd ton this season), one particular over of Mo from their off spinner going for 26! The partnership was broken when Mo fell for a magnificent 111 (80 balls, 14 x 4, 4 x 6), adjudged LBW to Fit Men umpire Raj. Leaving Sharif (promoted by Bice the scorer and number 5 batsman…..you really are a great fella Bicey) to hit the winning runs, a glorious on drive for 4 (unbeaten on 8, 2 X 4), skipper 58 not out…. and the Fit Men sealing the deal in the 33rd over with a 7 wicket win!

Both teams repaired to the bar and quickly out onto the pavilion steps in still hot conditions to drink and finish off the remains of an excellent tea. A little reminiscing took place between the oppo Yudi and Vince (stalwarts of 20 plus seasons for Khalsa) and Fit Men Caesar, Sharif, Frost and Howarth….retelling old games……remember Bull stops play Sharif!

A fantastic win and a game when truly all 11 Fit Men contributed to the cause! Well played…….bring on the 8th in a row!
