TURGIO GOES TURBO TO INVOKE RAIN GODS
Well what an afternoon. With the forecast for rain at 3pm a T20 game was arranged so a result could be achieved.
Old Dom's won the toss and elected to field in their last game of the season. Fair play to them for putting up with a torrid couple of hours.
With Tom Bartlett and Turgio opening up, the 2nd ball was dispatched by Tom for 6, smashing a number of club house roof tiles in the process and another whacked for four in imperious fahion. Howarth, keen to shed his Turgid reputation fired his 2nd ball to the boundary and then proceeded to be very aggressive dispelling any notion of "i'm not enjoying it any more" with a wait for it..."quick fire" 19 off just 14 deliveries with only 2 dot balls to his name. Tom was batting really well at the other end showing a fine array of shots before his partner donned the old Kamikaze bandana and ran him out for a cracking 31 off 20.
The rain gods were displeased with Turboturg and sent down a persistant fine rain (you know the stuff that really soaks you through) and this reporter was umpiring with a sleeveless jacket. The conditions were very poor but Old Dom's soldiered on much to the appreciation of Butcher who played really well despite the rain/wet golves/slippy handle which nearly resorted in the decapitation of an umpire when his bat flew 20 yards (after missing the ball).
Butcher's 61 which wont count in the season's averages (some sort of arcaic Fitman ruling from 1984) - which is a shame because it was a memorable knock.
Chaz Sadheva reinstated to number 4 after a couple of seasons in the wilderness of middle order grabbed his opportunity with a nice 17, and Tahir, who really really didn'r want to go out in the downpour scored 14. With puddles forming after the allotted 20 overs (150-3) it was decided to abandon all hope of finishing and retire to the bar for a cracking tea and selection of ales.
The forecast looks set fair for the last match against Coftonians. Lets hope this rain soaked summer at least allows us one last Hurrah.
