Old Mo win by 9 wickets

Fitting tribute…...in memory of Alan ‘Thommo’ Thomas

The flag at half mast focussed the hosts minds on the fact that this was our first home game since the tragic accident that led to the death of our revered groundsman Thommo. Tributes can be found elsewhere – links at the foot of this report.

Back to the match…….

A dry and almost windless day saw The Fitmen bounce back from 3 reversals to chalk up a convincing home victory chasing down the target of 194 with 10 overs and 9 wickets to spare. Elsewhere the flimsy hopes of England hanging on in day 5 at Old Trafford were dashed so Root’s team head for The Oval to try and square the series. Whatever the result in Vauxhall, The Ashes will be back on Quantas heading down under come the end of the month.

With Barford batting first, The Old Mo openers made a steady start on what turned out to be one of the best wickets of the season. Pretty much a true pitch, but enough in it for bowlers to exploit batting frailties. The only action in the slip cordon for 20 overs was the frisson on excitement when a car pulled in…...could it be Tuckerrrrr ready to relieve the Chairman.

Martin (6-0-27-1) used the captain’s prerogative to open downhill with control but not a great deal of luck (Stu made up for the drop with a 4 fer later). At the other end a good opening spell from Fraz (7-0-34-2) saw some zip and carry, and the ‘Broady balls’ (hitting top of off) did for both openers within the hour.

By the time the change bowlers came on, the visitors were under the cosh and needing to push on.
Wazeem exploited this beautifully with 4 maidens in his spell of 8-4-21-2. The tight bowling at the City End looked perfect for the reliable Shariff (4-0-23-0) to take advantage from the Golf Course end……...but a slight snivel (or if the Post Master General is reading……….a severe bout of flu) meant he wasn’t on top of his brief for once.

At drinks the visitors were 86-4 with Griffin keeping the visitors innings together and along with Hawks put on 60 for the 5th wicket hinting at a grandstand finish and upwards of 200 to chase. But cometh the hour commeth the Mould (8-0-40-4) who took control with around 15 overs to go. From the other end he was joined by Jonsey (7-0-31-0) who added height to the attack.

2 bowled and 2 caught (that’s the way to do it Stu) put the brakes on a fightback and set The Fitmen a target of 194.

Tea was designed to quieten down the troops ready for the Thommo eulogy. Replete on kilograms of Milan Pakora, Line caught tuna, Upside down cake and hand cracked black pepper and egg sarnies standing up for the speech was out of the question…….

The cornet solo opened the proceedings with Myfanwy, followed by the sermon and closed with Bread of Heaven………..proper Welsh Chapel stuff. An immaculately observed minutes silence (even Dora only did a mini growl) and with grateful thanks to Barford for joining the sombre moments we moved on to ‘do it for Thommo’ with the reply………...and we did.

Nothing much happened apart from scoring off the bad balls and a steady accumulation (which is the general idea of the openers Joe, Jason, KK et al). Take the shine off the ball, collect the runs and eventually a knighthood. 50 stand, hundred stand and then a momentary lapse and Mo skied after a sound 60 off 62.

Tom (not out 67 off 99) was joined by Tuckkerrrrr (46 off 28) who decided to ‘just get it done’. An emphatic home win by 9 wickets and commiserations to the visitors on ‘one of those days’…..the wheel will turn once again and in particular the quickie will learn and be a handful in years to come,.
