SCORECARD

Fit Men grab defeat from the jaws of victory!

A Fit Men XI……arrived at a picturesque and parched Wishaw C.C. under clear blue sky with the temperature climbing rapidly towards the late 20’s……The team assembled comprising of experience with a sprinkling of youth……that’s 4 under 40 (including very talented batsman….Bice with a quad issue)…..and 7 over 50……..with master leggie allrounder……Al Strickley topping the “ageometer” at 61 years and 38 days young!

With the toss won by skipper Howarth the Fit Men opened the batting with Horatio and Howarth……who it was hoped would amass an opening run partnership the total of their combined age of 104……The opening youthful bowling pair for Wishaw comprising of a tall quickie and a small medium pacer bowled well……with the score on 6 Horatio “buttocked” a ball down leg side and set off for a single……the ball travelling only several feet from the keeper…….Horatio was well out! Bice was in at 3 and played round a full straight ball, and was castled 2nd ball. Trouble a foot Howarth battoned down his hatches whilst at the other end Feraz in at 4 unleashed some lovely shots!......Skipper was next out for a well crafted 1 off 21 (much to the pleasure of his Whatsapp fanbase!). Sharif entered the fray and mixed some excellent stroke play with cautious defence, meanwhile Feraz went bowled for 21……..Enter talented, tattooed all rounder Dave Healey who “surveying calm when all around him was chaos”…….played the innings of the day…….and so far of his career (there will be many more of those to come Dave playing like that!!!!). DDH got off the mark with a scorching extra cover drive……and with their skipper sensing an early end to the game……messrs Sharif and Healey feasted on some “good natured bowling”. Shot of the day for DDH was a straight towering six into the adjoining field…..applauded by the good natured spin bowler Hugo who delivered the ball and had the mildest whisper of a “Howzat” when he thought a delivery was worth an enquiry……how different to the previous Sundays version of the game v Village!). With Sharif gone, Sol followed (hamstrung……limping)…..bowled…… and Raj, to his customary shot…….”have they seen Raj play before?” enquired Horatio (as their skipper set a field ideally suited to Raj’s demise). Strickers making his long awaited 5th return debut for the Fit Men rattled along to 8 off 4 before being castled…….Chairman then joined DDH and with the partnership of the day they both played superbly……Tony was able to free his arms and executed some majestic “carve drives” to the extra cover boundary……..it was during this unbeaten partnership that DDH got to his maiden 50 whilst Tony finished on 40 odd not out……….and a very competitive total posted all things considered!

The Fit Men XI took the field…….and with the walking wounded of Horatio (pending double hip replacement) at mid off, Sol (hamstrung) at gulley, and Bice (pulled right quad) keeping……..the fielders supported the opening bowlers really well. Sharif bowled parsimoniously taking a wicket whilst Raj picked up 2 wickets. With the heat of the day now turning to energy sapping humidity Fit Man skipper rotated the bowling, with everyone bowling well and the batsmen playing sensibly and not taking risks. A sound piece of advice from Bicey to replace himself behind the stumps with Horatio who was suffering with mobility issues, paid off immediately. Frost taking a sharp catch behind, followed by a superb reflex piece of glove work tipping the ball to the ever alert DDH at 2nd slip being the highlight!......In spite of an all run 5 as a result of the ball travelling between hamstrung Sol and Quad Bice……….with middle innings overs bowled tightly by Strickley, Healey and Bal, the Fit Men suddenly found themselves in an ever growing stronger position……enter Feraz and Ceasar for the death bowling…..10 odd overs to go 80 odd runs to win! Game on……Tony was landing the ball on a “six pence” and taking wickets consistently (2) and the score rate was starting to climb…..whilst at the other end Feraz who was previously suffering with a back strain and bowling off spin decided to bend his back and come in off his full run up……with success taking 3 wickets……the oppo having reversed their batting order where now really up against it and with a field set to minimise boundaries the oppo struggled in the remaining overs…….

So here we where the final over…….15 runs needed, field set to suit……..left arm Gripper Tony Caesar in a fine groove 7-0-38-2………We all thought we have got this one in the bag…….oppo batsman (son getting a little tetchy with father as the latter could not find the boundary)…….What could be better Wishaw Dad to face the “Fit Man Daddy of them all”……
Ball One…..Dot……batting son getting more vexed with father!
Ball Two……Ditto………..
Ball Three ….…..low full toss…..over the pav……father is stirred!
Ball Four………Ditto…………
Update: 2 balls to go 3 runs to win……..
Ball Five……..2 runs……
Ball Six………Well Played Wishaw!!!!!!!

With handshakes all round of the oppo……dazed that they had won…….as much as we where that we had lost…..we returned to a quiet dressing room……….

A little later with the mood repaired somewhat with bottled chilled Bulmers…….we all sat outside the clubhouse refecting on what a beautiful venue Wishaw CC is…..only to be distracted by the clang of the keys of Wishaw awarded to our left Arm Gripper. They will hang nicely with the keys from Evesham Rowing Club and Kington C.C……welcome to the "Fit Men Death Yips Club" TC!
